ResourcesThe Blended Environment
E-learning is the delivery of training and education using Internet technologies. Usually e-learning is either available on the Internet or on organisations' intranets. It can take many forms, from simple electronic versions of books through to complex programmes which use audio, video and animations. E-learning is most suited for knowledge-based learning, though it can be successfully applied to develop skills too. It is a cost-effective method for training large groups with consistent messages and allows self-paced, self-assessed learning, which can be tracked and reported centrally.
What is a virtual learning portal?
A typical VLP is a rich, visually compelling world that motivates the learner to both interact and collaborate with fellow learners to grow and develop.
Relevant articles, news items, webinars and discussion forums give a fresh and ever-changing look to the portal which engages their interest and keeps them coming back.
Forums
A forum is an online space where people can contribute to discussions. Unlike a conversation, questions and comments are posted to the discussion forum over a period of time and can be viewed by any member of the learning community. They can be archived, categorised and searched for future reference. Some forums are 'moderated'. This means that someone takes responsibility for facilitating the discussion, setting direction and filtering comments and questions posted by participants. Others are 'open', meaning anyone is free to take part within the community of learners. Forums are a simple way of following up classroom-based learning, allowing participants to stay in touch and carry on collaborating at a distance.
Virtual classroom
The virtual classroom is a space for live online events. It can bring together participants from many different areas without them having to leave the office. Using either phones or headsets to speak to each other and to the tutor, participants take part in a facilitated event. The facilitator can share content with participants such as e-learning, slides, software applications, conduct quizzes and run seminars in the virtual classroom. Live sessions can be recorded and viewed at a later date, creating a valuable learning resource.
