Associate Prosecutors

 

There are 10 online modules supporting the continuing development of both new and experienced Associate Prosecutors as advocates. The modules cover basic principles of Magistrates court advocacy (modules 1 - 5) together with more advanced principles (modules 6-10).

 
 

Modules

Guilty Pleas
Estimated Completion Time: 50 Minutes

This module covers the knowledge that you will need to have during court hearings when dealing with guilty pleas. You will look at: Your legal role; Mode of Trial issues; Compensation; Law and Practice.

 

Magistrates Court Bail Applications Parts 1 – 4
Estimated Completion Time: 2 Hours total

Part 1 covers the basic principles of the Bail Act 1976.

Part 2 helps you present your objections to granting bail.

Part 3 looks at breaches of bail and custody time limits.

Part 4 deals with Youth Bail and Appeals against the granting of bail.

 

Competence and Compellability
Estimated Completion Time: 25 Minutes

This module will show you how to identify and deal with issues of witness competence, and explains compellability of witnesses. It also shows you how to recognise and deal with reluctant or hostile witnesses.

 

Questioning Skills
Estimated Completion Time: 30 Minutes

This module provides an introduction to the theory of questioning in criminal proceedings.

 

The Expert Witness
Estimated Completion Time: 25 Minutes

This module explains the significance of expert evidence and how to deal with cases involving it.

 

Examination in Chief and Cross Examination
Estimated Completion Time: 35 Minutes

This module deals with how to present prosecution evidence, how to anticipate a Defence Advocate's cross-examination of prosecution witnesses, how to present the prosecution case effectively to defence witnesses and how to test the defence account.

 

Advocates Repair Kit
Estimated Completion Time: 35 Minutes

This module helps you deal with potentially difficult situations encountered from time to time in court and provides a "resource kit" you can refer back to when engaged in your work as an advocate.
