There are 16 online modules supporting the ADP for New Lawyers, they cover Stage One Basic Principles, modules 1 - 3 and Stage Three Advanced Principles, Modules 4 - 16.

Overview

An introduction to the Advocacy Development Programme modules, including module descriptions and navigation instructions.

 

Guilty Pleas
Estimated Completion Time: 50 Minutes

This module covers the knowledge that you will need to have during court hearings when dealing with guilty pleas. You will look at: Your legal role; Mode of Trial issues; Compensation; Law and Practice.

 

Course of Trial
Estimated Completion Time: 50 Minutes

This module will help you to acquire the basic skills that will enable you to prepare properly to prosecute trials in the Magistrates' Court, observe rules of practice and procedure and to cross examine witnesses effectively.

 

Magistrates Court Bail Applications
Estimated Completion Time: 95 Minutes

This module has been split into 4 short parts dealing with various aspects of Magistrates' Court Bail Application. Part 1: Covers basic principals of the Bail Act 1976. Part 2: Helps you to present your objections to granting bail. Part 3: Looks at breaches of bail and custody time limits. Part 4: Deals with Youth Bail and Appeals against the granting of bail.

 

Competence and Compellability of Witnesses
Estimated Completion Time: 25 Minutes

This module will show you how to identify and deal with issues of witness competence, and explains compellability of witnesses. It also shows you how to recognise and deal with reluctant or hostile witnesses.

 

Questioning Skills
Estimated Completion Time: 20 Minutes

This module provides an introduction to the theory of questioning in criminal proceedings.

 

Bad Character
Estimated Completion Time: 20 Minutes

This module covers the new statutory scheme relating to the admissibility of bad character evidence.

 

The Expert Witness
Estimated Completion Time: 15 Minutes

Here we look at the significance of expert evidence and how to deal with cases involving it.

 

Admissibility of Hearsay
Estimated Completion Time: 25 Minutes

This module describes the main provisions of the Criminal Justice Act 2003 under which hearsay evidence becomes admissible, and provides practical solutions to areas likely to give rise to legal argument.

 

Submission of no Case to Answer
Estimated Completion Time: 15 Minutes

This module will show you how to anticipate a likely submission of no case to answer and how to marshal and present arguments in response to such submissions.

 

Dealing with Rebuttal Evidence
Estimated Completion Time: 15 Minutes

This module looks at the basic rules covering the admission of evidence after you have closed your case.

 

Newton Hearings
Estimated Completion Time: 15 Minutes

This module identifies the common reasons for seeking a Newton Hearing, how to apply for a hearing and how to carry out your duty as a prosecutor during the hearing.

 

Opening Trails and Committals
Estimated Completion Time: 30 Minutes

This module shows you how to present your own case more effectively in opening, how to anticipate likely lines of defence, how to give a clear and concise account of a case and how to deal with committals.

 

Examination-in-chief and cross Examination
Estimated Completion Time: 30 Minutes

Here we deal with how to present prosecution evidence, how to anticipate a Defence Advocate's cross-examination of prosecution witnesses, how to present the prosecution case effectively to defence witnesses and how to test the defence account.

 

Conducting a Voir Dire
Estimated Completion Time: 15 Minutes

This module identifies the circumstances in which a Voir Dire will be necessary and how to conduct it on behalf of the prosecution.

 

Advocates Repair Kit
Estimated Completion Time: 25 Minutes

This module helps you to deal with potentially difficult situations encountered from time to time in court and provides a "resource Kit" you can refer back to when engaged in your work as an advocate.

 

Crown Court Bail Application
Estimated Completion Time: 15 Minutes

This module aims to equip you with the knowledge of law and procedure together with the skills necessary to conduct a Crown Court bail application.
